What is "Authenticity"? Authenticity calls us to be genuine. Those who embody authenticity in public life are not afraid to be themselves. They have the confidence to engage in true dialog with opposing views. Alternate ideas and opinions are respectfully and thoughtfully tested. Such open-mindedness provides the sure foundation for sound democratic decision-making. Through authenticity, politicians transcend politics. Today, authenticity is an all-but-forgotten political virtue. The consequences threaten to swallow us whole. Without it, our democratic community is discounted to a culture of spin and celebrity where principle is traded for principal. In this triumph of market values, authentic values such as honesty and integrity are discounted and dumped. The virtues of “spin” - posturing, maneuvering, and manipulation – are highly prized. Instead of reasoned arguments based on facts and logic, public relation talking points sway a distracted public. What once were citizens have now become disinterested consumers. Dizzy with spin, we cannot think clearly to act effectively. How can we break out of this fraudulent political culture? Authenticity is the antidote. By demanding authenticity in public life, we take a crucial step out of the confusion. TrueDialog.org is committed to developing and implementing practical, local programs that engage and empower by fostering authenticity. With this, we begin the difficult task of redeeming and restoring our heritage as citizens in a free society. *** |
