November 11, 2007 - Remembering Armistice Day

Now we call it Veteran's Day, but November 11 marks the end of "The war to end all wars" or the "Great War," what we now refer to as World War I.

Eighty-nine years ago, it was "all quiet on the Western front" at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month. The holiday, called "Remembrance Day " in the British Commonwealth, is no longer a remembrance of the end of the great conflict. As another, greater war followed 21 years later, it was renamed. During World War II, it became "Veteran's Day" in the United States.

The distance between recognizing the bittersweet peace that was the original Armistice Day and today's "support our troops" Veteran's Day is well worth contemplating.
