July 22 - Charity Begins at Home with our Presidential Candidates

The presidential campaigns are in full swing, and as you might hope many candidates are involved with many public spirited activities and organizations. Numerous "charitable" organizations created by some of the candidates are out doing good deeds. As a byproduct, they also happen to be generating a generous amount of positive messaging about their founders.

Non Profit Quarterly columnist Rick Cohen sees that using tax exempt organizations for passing such feel-good PR messaging is apparently one thing that candidates on both sides of the aisle have in common. How he takes them to task is required reading:

...it’s time to remind presidential candidates of all stripes to avoid mucking around -- intentionally or not -- with 501(c)(3) nonprofits in the course of their campaigns.
