Carl Lindemann's Clips

To satisfy the curiosity of those interested in "who signs my paychecks," I offer a few clips of my work as a professional writer/geek.

The CyberScene.com website had been my "portfolio" but I took it down about two years ago in that it had gotten out-of-date. I had intended to freshen it up, but most of my work comes through referrals these days. In other words, I have not been overly motivated to focus on that task.

I cut my teeth as a trade writer (i.e. writing for industry publications) in the Dot Com era for several broadcast and "pro audio" publications. I got started as the online era took off. Some of the predictions then are of some import now, like this piece that should be required reading for those considering the "Net Neutrality" issue. I had a terrific "glass bottom boat" view of the happenings with my "Web Watch" column. It was a wonderful, inventive time where many ideas - some better than others - were gathering multi-million dollar investors. Here's a look-ahead to the "Wireless Wave of the Future" - we're still not quite there yet.

During this period, I also did a good deal of work in magazines (like Time Magazine's spinoff, "On") as a "Gadget Guru" testing and reviewing the latest in consumer electronics - MP3 players, televisions, stereos and the like.

After the Dot Com collapse and the tragedy of 9/11, my business changed radically as the publishing industry suffered in the downturn that followed. I started writing about general technology. "Stars, Stripes & Solutions" is about what VARs and SI's (that is, Value Added Resellers and Systems Integrators) needed to know to go from doing corporate IT work to getting government contracts in the wake of 9/11, following the Dot Com collapse. It's got an interesting account of one crew working to restore the systems at the Pentagon after the attack there.

Lately, I've had the good fortune of returning to cover the New Media beat for Sports Video Group, a publication for sports broadcasters and the equipment makers that help them make their magic. My beat covers where some of the most innovative developments in communications are taking place. Here, see how "social networking" may soon be coming to a website near you. Or, if you cannot wait for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, here's where to whet you appetite. Has your hockey habit turned into a full-blown addiction? It may be if you know firsthand if the "two screen" experience is better than one.
